WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU AS A POSTPARTUM DOULA?
A typical Doula commitment could last anywhere from 1 – 2 weeks to a couple of months depending on the needs of the client.  It can be a dynamic relationship setting an initial goal of a specified number of days per week for a few weeks with the flexibility of adding additional time, depending on next scheduled family commitment.  It can be a day time schedule from 4 – 6 hours, or it can be a night time schedule.  There are variations available.  The goal is to work myself out of a job, as the new parents get more confident going solo, getting back into some of their old routines and adapting to new ones.  Here are some examples of the services a Doula can provide:

Show the new parents basic baby care including diapering, holding, bathing, burping, clothing and soothing skills.
Give breastfeeding guidance to the mother, including positioning, latch, and supply questions.**
Help organize baby’s supplies and changing areas.
Make sure that the new parents are well stocked with food and supplies, preparing light meals and running errands when needed.
Wash baby’s laundry.
Watch baby for while parents get a well deserved shower or nap.
Screen phone calls and visitors.
Accompany family on a trip to pediatrician if desired.*
Provide appropriate referrals as desired.
Light housekeeping:  wash dishes, tidy up bedroom and bathroom, clean up after baby.

*Because of liability issues, I would not be able to drive.
**I have completed the UCLA Lactation Educator Training Program.

Here are some of the limitations of the Doula practice:
No diagnosis of medical conditions.
No clinical tasks such as taking blood pressure.
No decision making for the parents.  Education and support of the family decision is the focus.  Referrals to outside resources or literature can be provided to get the information necessary for an informed family decision.
No solo care of the baby without a parent in the house.
